کارشناس منابع انسانی باید با روند جذب و استخدام، ارزیابی عملکرد، مدیریت روابط کارکنان، آموزش و توسعه، حقوق و دستمزد و قوانین کار آشنایی داشته باشد. گذراندن دوره‌های تخصصی منابع انسانی مانند مدیریت منابع انسانی، حقوق کار یا روابط کار می‌تواند مفید باشد؛ همچنین گذراندن دوره‌های نرم‌افزارهای مدیریت منابع انسانی (HRMS) مانند SAP یا نرم‌افزارهای مشابه می‌تواند مفید باشد.

از نظر مهارت‌های فردی کارشناس منابع انسانی باید:

• مهارت‌های ارتباطی عالی داشته باشد.
• توانایی حل تعارض و مذاکره داشته باشد.
• سازماندهی و مدیریت زمان خوبی داشته باشد.
• توانایی کار تحت فشار و تصمیم‌گیری درست در شرایط بحرانی داشته باشد.
• اخلاق حرفه‌ای، اعتماد به نفس و توانایی گوش دادن فعال داشته باشد.
